Healthy Feet, Healthy Body

Our bodies work as integrated units, and many problems begin from the ground up. Our feet are our direct connection to the earth, and poor foot health can create imbalances in posture, gait, and overall alignment. Over time, repetitive poor movement patterns can shorten our healthspan.
When we walk, our toes naturally spread before pushing off the ground. Shoes that restrict this movement can limit balance and stability. Minimalist shoes, on the other hand, allow the toes to spread, increase contact with the ground, and create a wider, more stable base for walking, standing, and running.
For years, I’ve seen custom orthotics marketed as solutions for back problems, joint pain, and other imbalances. They may provide short-term relief for some, but they don’t replace the need to strengthen and condition the foot’s muscles, tendons, and ligaments. In fact, relying on rigid foot molds for too long can leave the feet weaker over time. That said, orthotics can still play an important role for certain people, such as those with severe deformities, advanced arthritis, or diabetes-related risks.
Ultimately, strong and flexible feet require training - just like any other part of the body. Shoes that follow the natural shape and movement of the foot can go a long way toward keeping them functional. Unfortunately, the narrow toe box common in many shoe designs has done far more harm than good.
And one last reminder: even the best shoes have a lifespan. Walking and running shoes typically last 300–500 miles, or about 6–12 months of regular use. If you’ve been in the same pair for years, your feet may be paying the price.
