The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has published compelling research. A large-scale study focusing on predominantly Black and low-income Americans powerfully underscores the vital role of truly nourishing plant foods in dramatically reducing the risk of mortality from a wide range of conditions, including heart disease.
It's crucial to understand that the term "plant-based" can be deceptive – a diet built on processed vegan items won't offer the same benefits as one centered on vibrant whole fruits, vegetables, legumes, sprouts and whole grains. The true key to health lies in the quality of the plant foods we choose.
The quality (i.e., healthiness) of plant foods was seldom considered in the link between plant-rich diets and mortality. Studies now support that a diet consisting of truly healthy plant-based foods may decrease mortality in both men and women, but the magnitude of the association varies across racial and ethnic groups.
