Whether traveling by plane, train, or four wheels, eating healthy can feel like a tough challenge. With fast food and convenience stores at every turn, it's easy to fall into the trap of sugary, salty, and fatty fare. But with a little preparation and mindfulness, you can maintain your healthy habits no matter how many miles you may be from home. Here are some tips to keep you nourished and energized on your journey.
Plan Ahead For Success
Planning in advance is key to healthy travel eating. Before you leave for longer trips, take inventory of what kind of coolers or insulated bags you'll need to pack perishable items properly. If flying, make sure to follow TSA guidelines on permitted foods. Plot out grocery stores near your destination, so you can easily stock up on fresh produce and healthy snacks upon arrival.
Stay Hydrated
Our bodies are made up of mostly water. Proper hydration is essential when traveling, especially if you'll be spending time in planes or cars. Be sure to pack a reusable water bottle and aim to drink water throughout the day. Avoid sugary beverages like "energy drinks", loaded coffees, sodas or juices, which can contribute to dehydration. It's easy to mistake thirst for hunger when on the road. The feeling usually passes the further you are from all the fast foods in the environment. Infuse distilled or spring water with fresh fruit or herbs for extra flavor if you tend to get bored with plain water.
Pack Smart Snacks
Healthy snacks can be your ally when traveling. Pack nutrient-dense options that are easy to eat on the go, such as:
Fresh fruits like apples, bananas, or grapes
Raw vegetables like carrot or celery sticks, cherry tomatoes, or sliced bell peppers
Nuts and seeds (avoid salted varieties)
Individually packaged nut butter or hummus cups
Dried fruits
Snap Peas
These will slow down hunger between meals or between flights without weighing you down.
Choose Wisely
If you must eat out, scan menus for healthier preparations. Don't be afraid to call ahead, ask about ingredients, and make special requests, like having sauces or dressings served on the side. At quick service places, opt for salads or veggie-packed wraps.
Brown Bag It
While dining out occasionally can be fun, preparing simple meals in your hotel room can save both calories and cash. Look for accommodations with mini-fridges and pick up portable foods like bagged salad kits, fresh fruits and veggie trays from the grocer.
By exercising a bit of foresight and willpower, you can absolutely maintain healthy eating habits during any travel scenario. Your body and mind will thank you for treating it well, even when home is miles away.
The benefits of making healthier decisions while travelling are priceless. I share stories of how I've been able to navigate health while on the road in my latest literary work - Young at Any Age: Secrets to Slowing the Aging Process. This thought-provoking journey resonates deeply with those seeking youthful radiance amidst our prematurely aging society.
