Staying on Track with Wellness While Traveling

Travel can easily throw off health goals, but with planning, I’ve learned to stay on track with wellness no matter where I go.
Assess Destination Activity Level
First things first. When choosing locations, it's always a good idea to get a feel for the culture. How do the locals get around? I research how much walking is typical and whether rideshares are a must. This helps me to structure an adaptable fitness plan. If my hotel lacks a gym, basic bodyweight movements like squats, push-ups, planks, jumping jacks, etc. can be done anywhere.
Evaluate Dining Options
I review restaurant menus and grocery stores online to identify healthy choices suited to my diet. Calling ahead prevents surprises. Packing nutritious foods like fresh fruits and veggies is a must. Cooked street food is a popular tourist attraction. It's an easy no for me. I see them as breeding grounds for cross-contamination and poor sanitary food prep. Why take the risk?
Prioritize Sleep
Getting enough rest before and during trips, despite disruptions from time zone changes, keeps my immunity strong. I aim for at least 6 hours nightly. Daylight exposure and activity outdoors set the stage for better sleep at night.
Hydrate Properly
I pack a refillable water bottle and fill up post airport-security to avoid purchasing sugary drinks. In certain regions with unsafe tap water, I drink only bottled water and avoid ice. Staying hydrated makes travel more enjoyable.
While each destination may present unique wellness challenges, proper preparation allows me to explore new places without derailing my progress. With the right mindset, travel and healthy living can coexist. I hope these personal examples and practical strategies empower others to confidently continue to tour new places without compromising wellness goals.
