Stronger Muscles, Longer Life

For years, longevity advice has focused mostly on cardio.

But muscular strength is just as important.

A study published in JAMA Network Open followed 5,472 women aged 63–99 and found that stronger muscles were associated with significantly longer survival - even after accounting for aerobic fitness and daily physical activity.

Researchers measured strength using two simple tests:

  • Grip strength

  • The five-times sit-to-stand test

Women who performed better on these tests were far less likely to die during the follow-up period.

The study doesn’t prove causation. But it reinforces a message that often gets overlooked: Strength is not just about performance.

Stronger muscles may be one of the clearest signals of how well we age.

Strength training belongs in every healthspan plan.
