Sunlight Is a Key Component in Extending Healthspan

Over a billion people are walking around deficient in vitamin D, and most don't even know it.
I didn't realize how much sunlight mattered until I started paying attention to how I felt on days when I actually got outside early versus days when I stayed inside until afternoon. The difference was obvious once I noticed it.
Getting adequate sunlight has done wonders for me - maintaining a positive mental attitude, strengthening my bones, and improving my overall health in ways I didn't expect. My sleep got better. My energy became more consistent. Even my recovery from training improved.
It's one of the simplest interventions available, and most people ignore it because it seems too basic to matter.
Here are some key benefits of sunlight:
Produces Vitamin D: Sunlight's UVB (Ultraviolet B) rays help your skin convert cholesterol into Vitamin D, essential for absorbing calcium for strong bones, muscle function, and immune health.
Boosts Mood: It increases the brain's production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that promotes feelings of calm and focus, helping to combat depression.
Regulates Sleep: Natural light helps set your internal body clock (circadian rhythm), signaling your body to be awake during the day and produce melatonin (the sleep hormone) at night, improving sleep quality.
Supports Immunity: Vitamin D from sunlight helps immune cells function properly, fighting infections and reducing inflammation.
Lowers Blood Pressure: Sunlight triggers the release of nitric oxide, which helps relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure.
Kills Bacteria: Sunlight can kill bacteria, potentially improving indoor air quality by reducing dust-borne bacteria.
Sunlight is crucial, which is why I dedicated an entire section to it in my book Young at Any Age: How to Feel Younger, Longer. Sunlight is a key component in extending your healthspan, but it's a balance; your specific needs depend heavily on personal factors, so listen to your body and your doctor for personalized safety guidance.
