That Innocent Paper Receipt Might Not Be So Innocent After All

Like many of you, I used to grab paper receipts without a second thought. But recent research has me rethinking this daily habit.
Here's what caught my attention:
Most paper receipts are printed on thermal paper containing hormone-disrupting chemicals. Until recently, this was BPA (bisphenol A) - linked to fertility issues, insulin resistance, and metabolic disorders.
Since the switch from BPA by many manufacturers, 85% of paper receipts now contain a different chemical coating called BPS (bisphenol S). But the concerning news? BPS appears to have similar hormone-disrupting effects as BPA, potentially contributing to:
Reproductive health issues
Gestational diabetes risk
Insulin resistance
Metabolic dysfunction
The skin absorption factor: Both chemicals absorb through skin contact, though it takes hours (not seconds). The real concern is for retail workers handling thousands daily, but frequent shoppers should also be mindful.
Here are 4 simple protection strategies to avoid exposure to BPA (or BPS) in paper receipts:
Hold receipts with fingertips only
Wash hands after handling (skip hand sanitizer - it increases absorption!)
Choose electronic receipts when possible
Don't let receipts sit in purses/pockets where dust can transfer
As someone focused on healthspan optimization, I'm now much more conscious about these "minor" daily exposures that can accumulate over time. Small changes, significant impact.
