We can sleep without ever truly resting.

The distinction matters more than most people realize. Rest is passive. Sleep is the body's most active maintenance window - cellular repair, neurological processing, hormonal reset, immune calibration, and the clearance of metabolic waste that accumulates during waking hours.

MIT research published in Nature Neuroscience confirmed that the brain's housekeeping system and its waking functions cannot operate simultaneously. The maintenance runs during sleep.

When the window shortens consistently, the queue builds. The body falls further behind.
