The Growing Obesity Epidemic: Causes and Solutions

Obesity is a growing global health crisis. According to the World Health Organization, worldwide obesity has nearly tripled in the last 50 years. In 2016, over 1.9 billion adults were overweight and over 650 million were obese. The Center for Disease Control reported that a staggering 80% of African-American women in the United States were overweight or obese. Why is a preventable cause of disease and death continuing to rise around the world?
One reason for this may be the psychological role food plays. We often use food to celebrate when happy or to comfort when sad. In the U.S., anxiety and depression are common mental health issues. Those with social anxiety may overeat unhealthy foods out of fear of judgment. Mood disorders like depression can cause emotional volatility, leading to impulsive comfort eating.
Ultra-processed foods induce troubling changes in both the brain and body. These high-calorie, low-nutrient foods are quickly absorbed in the bloodstream. They stimulate dopamine receptors, interfering with the brain's signals to stop eating. Over time, this can deplete dopamine receptors, similar to patterns seen in cocaine and heroin addiction. Refined carbs especially promote overeating by exciting the brain's pleasure centers. Physically, these foods also wreak havoc. Inflammation and insulin levels rise, while blood pressure surges. The blood sugar spike further excites fat storage hormones like insulin, signaling cells to accumulate excess energy as fat.
Overeating strains the body's organs by forcing them to tolerate accumulating toxins. This prematurely breaks down the heart, liver, pancreas, kidneys and lungs. Reading nutrition labels can help identify unhealthy ingredients that are stimulating and addictive. But emphasizing more foods without labels can be a great way to get on the express route to better health. Fresh fruits and vegetables are best for losing excess body fat.
Before starting any new diet or exercise program, seek guidance from medical professionals and personal trainers. They can help build endurance and fitness through consistent plans tailored to your needs. With proper guidance and perseverance, healthier lifestyle management is within reach!
