As someone who's become increasingly conscious about what goes into my body, I was stunned to learn that approximately 10,000 chemicals have been added to our foods, many without proper safety testing.
Did you know the FDA recently banned Red Dye No. 3 after DECADES of use, but the ban won't even take effect until 2027? Meanwhile, chemicals like BHA, BHT, and titanium dioxide remain in our food despite concerning health links.
What struck me most was learning that it's not just what's IN our food, it's also what's AROUND it. Chemicals in packaging like BPA and PFAS can leach into what we eat, potentially disrupting hormones and contributing to various diseases.
A great way to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals is to opt for whole foods as the chemicals are found mostly in processed foods. Choose fresh fruits and vegetables that are not in containers as a way to bypass the chemicals in food packaging. As a practical step, I'm focusing more on whole, minimally-processed, plant nourishing foods. Small changes add up, especially for vulnerable groups like children and pregnant women.
